50 Top SF Sites
These are the 50 science fiction sites which got the most hits in 1997,
according to Web Bound/Web21.
This excludes sites about single authors (such as Asimov, Clarke, King),
magazine sites (such as Omni Online), dedicated database sites
(Locus/Contento, ISFDB), search engines, and general sites with some
SF content, such as the Internet Movie Database or its parent company
Amazon.com -- note: some of the oldest, biggest, and best sites are not
the ones getting enough hits to be listed here. Go back to the Ultimate

Comments: "The FKA (the Federation-Klingon Alliance) is a Star Trek derived
sim group which has been in existence, in varying forms, for two years
(since 1993) [hmmm: isn't that 5 years now?]. In its present form,
it is a democratically organized group of ships, with each CO
(Commanding Officer) having one vote on the FKA Council, representing
the interests of her/his ship and its crew within the FKA as a whole.
The FKA seeks to create an environment where the sims are good and
well-run, and the participating simmers have fun. For information on
how to join, see the "Simming Information" section and look for the
FKA Application. Or, feel free to contact any FKA CO about joining
their ship. Good Sailing! Admiral Hawkeye, FKA Commander,
retired"

Description: non-profit organization: "The Minnesota Science Fiction Society,
Inc., is a Minnesota non-profit corporation dedicated to furthering the
appreciation of science fiction and fantasy literature.
Comments: The Minnesota Science Fiction Society, Inc. (Minn-StF)
sponsors social meetings on the first and third Saturday of
each month. These are generally held at the homes of various members.
Information on these meetings is published in this site.
Once a year in recent years, they have a pool party at the Radisson
South (the hotel where they host Minicon) in place of one of the
regular meetings.
Minn-StF sponsors some local science fiction conventions:
* Minicon (large regional convention, held over Easter weekend,
recently crossed the 3500 member mark)
* Reinconation (small convention, under 200 people, the way some of
us remember Minicon in the old days)
Minn-StF sponsors a number of regular or irregular publications,
of which I highly recommend "Tales of the Unanticipated"
a Semi-pro fiction zine to which I have subscribed for many
years, which has some excellent fiction, illustration,
reviews, and poetry.
The general Minn-StF snail-mailing address is:
P.O. Box 8583
Lake Street Station
Minneapolis, MN 55408

- Science Fiction Forum
Description: Student SF organization
Comments: "The Science Fiction Forum at Stony Brook (SF4M) is a multifaceted
organization/club at SUNY (State University of New York), Stony Brook.
The purpose of the SF4M is to make science fiction and fantasy
available to those who are interested. We accomplish this by
maintaining a science fiction, fact, fantasy and horror lending library
(the largest on the East Coast), showing films and videotapes, and by
organizing various science fiction related activities and events
whenever possible. Our library has hours officially between 9 am and
8 pm weekdays... but the lounge itself is usually open open for
much greater spans of time, and if we're there, the books are
accessable. The point is ... stop in anytime! If you care for politics,
our meetings are every Weds. night at 8:30 pm (during regular college
semesters - every other week in the summer)... and we do stuff like
organize events at these times. Remember, we are located in the
basement of Harriman Hall, rooms 020 and 029 - and the direct phone
to us is 632-6598. The SF4M has open membership to all graduate and
undergraduate students, alumni, and staff of SUNY @ Stony Brook, and
all neighboring communities (with the exception of the Vogon homeworld).
One of the things the SF4M does to keep polity and the student
body happy is to include a statement of non-discrimination, the
'mandatory statement', is in our constitution. Then, of course, there's
the ever popular trials and tribulations of our Usenet Newsgroup,
. There's currently an archival system in progress. In deep
storage are articles from November 1994. There's now an automated
archiver, and articles are available from April 1996 on.

(UFPI) is a 700+ member fan organization with a diversity in
membership yet a unity of purpose -- the enjoyment of Star Trek
as either an individual or family hobby. Chapters, throughout
the world, connect members to local Trek happenings through one
easily accessible organization to promote the concept of
Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combination (IDIC).
UFPI members may select one of two membership options.
The "Citizen" option is for the occasional Trek fan, who only
desires to receive the newsletter and membership kit.
The serious Trek fan usually elects the active option where he
can enlarge upon his interest by joining the meeting,
correspondence, or electronic chapter of his choice. Chapter
membership enables him to enjoy a fictitious starship or
installation atmosphere where rank and position are available
along with many opportunities to meet other fans; participate
in Trek activities: and serve the local community.
New members receive a membership packet containing the
member's handbook and certificate, chapter and point of contact
directory, academy application, chapter assignment card and
surprises. The handbook is the member's guide to adventure
within the UFPI.
Included within your membership is a six issue subscription
to the UFPI newsletter, 'The Universal Translator'. This
newsletter reports the latest club news and reports, chapter
and individual member activities, and general interest Trek
information. Once a year UFPI offers for an extra charge a
international anthology fanzine, called the Intergalactic
Viewscreen, made-up of club member created stories, poems,
and artwork.
To request UFPI membership, complete the membership
application (see the CompOps Files area for a copy of the
application) and mail it with your check or money order made
payable in U.S. funds to:

"WSFA meets the first and third Fridays of every month at

Club meetings are primarily social gatherings: After a brief business
meeting, the group gathers informally over light refreshments to talk about just
about anything including (on occasion) SF. Meetings are held in

* What's New at WSFA Online? "Disclave '98 has been canceled.
Our hotel canceled our contract six weeks prior to the convention.
We will refund all paid memberships."
"(Almost) Every Spring (usually Memorial Day weekend), WSFA hosts
Disclave (the District of Columbia Conclave),
its annual science fiction convention. Disclave attracts sf fans,
authors, editors, and artists from around the region. Activities
include panels on topics related to SF, a Dealers' Room selling new
